Respite Care Services | This Beloved Life

Collage of joyful and comforting moments emphasizing meaningful end-of-life care.

Loving someone through the end of life can be beautiful, exhausting, frightening, meaningful—and sometimes all of those things in the same day. Family caregivers often require support, too. That's where respite care comes in. It allows me or a member of my team to provide a calm, compassionate, non-medical presence, ensuring your loved one has someone beside them while you take a well-deserved break. You might choose to use that time for rest, such as sleeping or taking a shower, running errands, enjoying a dinner out, attending your child's soccer game, spending time with another family member, or simply sitting somewhere quiet and breathing for a while. Our family support services are designed to help you during this challenging time.

What Respite Care Looks Like

Companionship & Presence — Sitting with your loved one during end-of-life care, talking or listening when they desire company, reading aloud, playing music, watching a favorite show together, or simply being quietly present. Basic Comfort — Providing appropriate non-medical comfort measures, such as helping with pillows or blankets, light repositioning when appropriate, offering permitted food or fluids according to the established care plan, soothing touch, adjusting the environment, or helping them access items they need, all of which enhance family support services. Observation & Communication — Being familiar with common changes that can occur during the dying process, keeping you informed of meaningful changes, and contacting the appropriate family member or healthcare professional according to the plan we've established together. Caregiver Relief — Allowing you to attend to your own needs without leaving your loved one by themselves during the scheduled respite care period.

How We Differ From Medical Staff

Our respite care is a non-medical service designed to complement—not replace—hospice, palliative care, home health, nursing, or other medical services, serving as an essential aspect of end-of-life care. We do not administer medications, perform medical procedures, take vital signs for clinical monitoring, diagnose changes in condition, or provide skilled nursing care. If a medical need or concerning change arises, we adhere to the communication plan established with you and engage the appropriate healthcare provider.

Our focus is on supporting the individual as a whole—their comfort, environment, emotional and spiritual needs, companionship, and those little aspects that can make this time feel less frightening and more human. While we are dedicated to the person who is dying, our respite care also extends to include family support services for loved ones.

Taking a break from caring duties doesn't mean you are leaving your loved one to face this alone; it means that someone else is there by their side, allowing you the necessary time to care for yourself as well.
